Residence Inn by Marriott Whistler Hotel Leads Way in Fostering Happy...



Residence Inn by Marriott Whistler, which has struck up a heartening relationship with the West Active Academy in Whistler, that benefits both the Whistler Hotel (http://www.whistler-marriott.com/) and staff from Korea.



The link-up offers immigrant workers the opportunity of secure employment and a strong base from which to integrate and contribute to Canadian society. In return the hotel gets its pick from a well-qualified and screened pool of potential associates.



Currently, the Marriott has three Korean staff members recruited through West Active. Clara Jeon, 23, from Pusan was hired in April 2008 and after successful lobbying by the hotel from November 2008, she received her full work permit at the beginning of February this year.



Despite the heavy workload (she had only studied at home in Korea and never worked a paid job), she is very grateful to the Marriott for working behind the scenes to ensure that her visa was granted. Clara emphasizes the hotel'ss spirit of camaraderie as key to her desire to stay on: Alison (the Operations Manager) did everything. The hotel tried to help me. I have an excellent relationship with my co-workers and I am very satisfied I can stay for another two years.



It is a simple working relationship - the Marriott notifies the operations manager at West Active when positions are available, who then sends a number of screened resumes selected for the available positions. Human Relations at the Marriott then decide which candidates will be successful. It is a fully symbiotic process as the Marriott benefits from the security of dealing with pre-screened candidates, the applicants have a better and a wider scope of employment to choose from.



Marriott operations manager Alison Gubbins has nothing but praise for the hired Korean staff: The applicants who have come to us through West Active have been very qualified workers. Most are studying Hospitality and Tourism while learning English and are very dedicated to the work. Before they start working, they have spent time in Whistler going to school and learning the area.



Clara and Rose have been amazing workers. They have positive spirits and a great work ethic. I am incredibly happy that they will be part of the Marriott Team for potentially the next two years! And with the Olympic opening ceremony less than a year away, tourism in the area is sure to bounce back, leaving Whistler and the Marriott needing all the best help they can get come 2010.
