Physician Cures Travel Woes With Innovative Laptop Bag for Women

When Penelope Manasco, a physician and former pharmaceutical executive, couldn's8217;t find a laptop bag that was stylish and comfortable to carry, she invented her own.

The new Avion Bag, which hit the market this month, is a fashionable laptop bag that converts from a great-looking shoulder bag to a backpack in seconds to provide an ergonomically correct option for carrying a computer through an airport in style.

's8220;I have logged more than 2 million miles of airlines travel as a physician, pharmaceutical executive and genetics scientist,'s8221; says Manasco of Wake Forest, N.C. 's8220;I was tired of the muscle spasms after each business trip from carrying my laptop in a beautiful briefcase that looked great but killed my shoulder and back. At the same time, my female pride would not let me carry a traditional backpack.

's8220;I spent two years trying to find a solution to my dilemma. But, there was nothing out there. So I started my own company, Penelope, and invented a fashionable and functional bag.'s8221;

The Avion Bag, which comes in leather or canvas, allows its users to carry all their essentials, satisfy the airlines's8217; 's8220;two-bag's8221; rule and look great doing it. It features a separate, top-entry laptop compartment that makes going through airport security a snap.
In addition, it has five easily accessible pockets for cell phones, iPods and PDAs, pens, business cards and water bottle.

Manasco has already added another line to the Penelope collection, the Go Girl Laptop Messenger Bag. As its name implies, it was designed for college coeds and professional women who prefer messenger bags for carrying their laptops but were tired of the 's8220;guy's8221; bags out there.

Manasco tapped local college students to conduct market research. The result is a fun-loving, functional bag in fashionable solid and polka dot canvas with a padded, waterproof computer compartment, extra roomy section for books and individual pockets for cell phone, iPod, pens, etc.

College bookstores, including ones at University of North Carolina and University of Virginia, have already added the line to their offerings for students and faculty.
