Once again, Ste. Anne's Spa (http://www.steannes.com/media.html) has put its unwavering commitment to protecting the environment into action. In addition to existing initiatives--involving the spa's water consumption, its septic system, and its use of Aveda product line--the spa has recently been focusing on reforestation, and has eliminated its use of plastic water bottles.

Trees, such as the lovely old oak Noah Richler sits under each month as he hosts the Ste. Anne's Book Club, are among the most striking natural features of the spa's grounds. Trees not only attract birds, provide shade, break the wind, and create an appealing environment, but they also play a crucial practical role, contributing to our planet's respiratory system. This spring, as in previous years, Ste. Anne's has planted over 6200 seedlings; the tiny Norway Spruce, Red Oak, and White and Red Pine have already started taking carbon dioxide into their tissues and releasing oxygen into the atmosphere. Over the years, the spa has adopted many green practices, reflecting owner Jim Corcoran's firm belief that "humans should strive to give back what they take from the environment, and in doing so should improve the quality of the world we live in." Built on a natural spring, the spa uses spring-water for everything from laundry to filling its swimming pools and hot tubs. All water is recycled through the fully natural reedbed septic system, introduced in 2002. Energy-efficient lightbulbs, concerted recycling efforts, and the recent decision to stop distributing plastic water bottles all reflect the spa management's environmental awareness.

The breathtaking lawns and gardens at Ste. Anne's remain pesticide- and herbicide-free, in keeping with the spa's commitment to natural, organic products. Chef Christopher's favouring of organic local ingredients and the spa's use of plant-based Aveda products are also manifestations of this dedication to environmental wellness.
