Edmonton, Alberta resident Katherine Brown is one step closer to fulfilling her dream of creating a better tomorrow for her community. Ms. Brown was named one of six winners of the Avon Hello Tomorrow Fund, a $5,000 cash award program from Avon Canada, Inc. to support individuals in their work to empower women. Over 1,000 applications were submitted from across the country. Entries were required to present unique and achievable objectives to empower women or girls and ultimately improve society through breast cancer community service, awareness, or outreach programs.
Ms. Brown will apply the award to her "CommuniCancer" web site where people newly diagnosed with cancer can connect to others in a similar situation and to cancer survivors. Ms. Brown
created the site when her mother-in-law was diagnosed with cancer, and went looking for an online resource to help her cope. Says Ms. Brown, "I was shocked that this resource did not
exist. I imagined a web site where patients who became survivors could inspire others with their journey, and where healing could be facilitated through community and communication."
