Oregon Woman Organizes National Solidarity Event Mothers Uniting Mothers...



nternational Women'ss Day, at 8 p.m. (EST). It is a peaceful event that honors and celebrates the compassion and solidarity mothers have for each other, and how vital that support is to the success of families everywhere.


Ashland, Oregon January 8, 2009 -- Disturbed by the level of violence in the United States and the rest of the world, and the corresponding impact on families, Ashland, Oregon mother Janel Gagnon decided to take action. Mothers Uniting Mothers (M.U.M.) is the result: a peaceful nationwide event for mothers in the United States to express compassion for -- and raise awareness into -- the lives of mothers everywhere. The first event will take place on International Women'ss Day (March 8, 2009).



At 8 p.m. EST on March 8, 2009, mothers of diverse backgrounds from all over the United States of America are invited to stand together with other mothers in organized gatherings across the nation. There will be a 15-minute silent and contemplative candlelight vigil, culminating in a chorus of This Little Light of Mine, a song widely recognized by children and adults for its lyrics of confidence, hope and endurance.



This is a peaceful movement with a simple but powerful goal, said Gagnon. The purpose of M.U.M. is to send a message of compassion and solidarity to mothers worldwide through the organization of a simultaneous gathering of mothers from diverse backgrounds, standing together in unique communities across the United States. It is a celebration of the work that mothers do for each other daily within their communities. It is also a message of gratitude for the tireless efforts of individuals and groups working on behalf of mothers and their families, gathering resources to bring concrete, practical assistance to mothers. Both kinds of support are vital to families everywhere.



These three common things will happen nationwide during M.U.M.'ss first gathering:


1) Mothers will stand together, each with a candle in hand.


2) At 8 p.m. EST the candles will be lit in contemplative silence for 15 minutes, and


3) At 8:15 p.m. EST the gathered women will sing This Little Light of Mine.



Additionally, Gagnon suggests M.U.M. organizers use the event as a springboard for participants to act locally and globally to assist mothers. Here in Ashland, the M.U.M. event organizers will facilitate donations to The Safe Place/Mom'ss Hope Chest, a Medford, Oregon organization that distributes food, clothing and other basic essentials to low-income mothers and children, explained Gagnon. Globally there are numerous organizations that reach out to women in need, many of whom are mothers who are survivors of war or natural disaster. I am particularly impressed with Women for Women International (www.womenforwomen.org). They support women in war-torn regions with financial and emotional aid, job-skills training, rights education and small business assistance so they can rebuild their lives.



On March 7, the day prior to the national M.U.M. event, Southern Oregon University (SOU), located in Ashland, has planned a large event to celebrate International Women'ss Day. We hope that many mothers and families will participate in SOU'ss celebration. Across the nation there will be many events taking place in recognition of International Women'ss Day. These events can provide a natural bridge for the planning of the individual M.U.M. gatherings, said Gagnon.
